A Maritype is assembled from three components read left to right, with an optional fourth appended when needed. Together they describe a waterway's physical character and maritime infrastructure — independent of its name, era, or the vessels currently using it.
Waterway Type and Vessel Class are grouped before the dash because they describe the fixed physical character of the water body itself. Port status and any modifier follow because they describe how the waterway is used and what has been engineered onto it — attributes that can exist independently of the water body's fundamental type.

Maritypes are assigned to the specific stretch of waterway photographed or documented, following the same principle as Viatype and Ferritype: the code describes what's physically there, not the water body's reputation or common name.
WWTL — MSL-2026English place names are an unreliable guide to waterway type. A "channel" may be a natural strait (Beagle Channel, English Channel) or a dredged shipping channel; a "river" may run for miles through entirely artificial banks. The Maritype's Waterway Type letter refers strictly to physical origin and character — how the water body came to exist and what it fundamentally is — never to what it happens to be called.
