Maritype Architecture

WWTL — MARITIME METHODOLOGY
The Maritype is the structural classification unit for waterway and maritime infrastructure across the Worldwide Transportation Library. Where a body of water's name tells you what it's called, a Maritype reduces it to a compact code describing what it physically is — its waterway type, the scale of vessel it accommodates, whether it serves a port, and any notable engineered or navigational characteristics. This page introduces the notation as a starting framework; benchmarks and field guidance will expand as the system is applied across the archive.

The Maritype String

A Maritype is assembled from three components read left to right, with an optional fourth appended when needed. Together they describe a waterway's physical character and maritime infrastructure — independent of its name, era, or the vessels currently using it.

  • Waterway Waterway Type —C = Canal, a dug/artificial waterway. R = River, a natural watercourse, even where heavily engineered. L = Lake, a natural standing body of water. O = Ocean/sea, open saltwater. S = Strait, a natural narrow connector between two larger water bodies.
  • Vessel Vessel Class —1 = Small craft (recreational, fishing). 2 = Coastal/inland commercial. 3 = Deep-sea cargo. 4 = Panamax/post-Panamax or larger. Assigned by the largest vessel the waterway can structurally accommodate, not by its most common or most visible traffic — a river carrying both kayaks and commercial barges is classified by the barges, since that reflects an actual physical ceiling (draft, width, lock dimensions), not just what happens to pass through most often.
  • Port Port Status —P = Port or terminal present — any purpose-built docking infrastructure where vessels load, unload, or board, whether commercial, industrial, passenger, or recreational (a marina counts; a bare mooring buoy or open anchorage with no dock does not). N = No port, open-water transit only.
  • Modifier Notable Feature(s) —optional, one or more letters stacked together when a waterway has multiple defining characteristics, always given in this fixed order: F = Ferry route. I = Ice-class / seasonal freeze. L = Locks present. T = Tidal-influenced. X = Engineered flow reversal / hydraulically controlled. A waterway with both locks and an engineered reversal reads LX, never XL. The I modifier flags a seasonal navigability constraint only — it does not lower the Vessel Class. Vessel Class always reflects the waterway's structural ceiling during its ice-free operating window, since that is the physical capacity the waterway was built or dredged to handle; I simply notes that this capacity isn't available year-round.

Waterway Type and Vessel Class are grouped before the dash because they describe the fixed physical character of the water body itself. Port status and any modifier follow because they describe how the waterway is used and what has been engineered onto it — attributes that can exist independently of the water body's fundamental type.

Early Benchmarks

These first two entries test the notation against genuinely difficult edge cases — a natural river reshaped by heavy engineering, and a natural strait easily mistaken by name alone.

Tierra del Fuego, Argentina / Chile Beagle Channel S3-P-F A natural strait despite the English name — not a dug canal. Deep-sea class due to Antarctic cruise traffic staging from Ushuaia, an active port, plus an Argentina–Chile ferry route.

Maritypes are assigned to the specific stretch of waterway photographed or documented, following the same principle as Viatype and Ferritype: the code describes what's physically there, not the water body's reputation or common name.

A Note on Naming

English place names are an unreliable guide to waterway type. A "channel" may be a natural strait (Beagle Channel, English Channel) or a dredged shipping channel; a "river" may run for miles through entirely artificial banks. The Maritype's Waterway Type letter refers strictly to physical origin and character — how the water body came to exist and what it fundamentally is — never to what it happens to be called.
